IZLuC2020 Spokes Notes: 19 September 2020
We are preparing for the International Zine Librarians (un) Conference, to be held online October 30-November 2, 2020 (start and end dates vary by timezone!)

On Saturday 19th September, 22.00 – 22.30 UTC we held a meeting of representatives from all the different spokes (working groups) working on organising IZL(u)C. The meeting was facilitated by Lilith, notes were taken by Kelly M. In attendance were Ziba and Milo (Outreach and Promotion), Matthew (Technology), Kelly S, Kelsey and Ella (Programming), Kelly M and Lilith (Co-ordinating)

We held a meeting on Saturday, September 5 from 22:00-23:30 UTC. The meeting was facilitated by Jenna, notes were taken by Kelly S., and in attendance were Ziba, Milo, and April representing Outreach and Promotion, Matthew for Technology, Jenna with the Coordinating working group, Kelly S. for Social, and Rhonda, as yet unaffiliated. International Zine Librarians Unconference: another chance to get involved
As you may be aware, this year’s North American zine librarians unconference was canceled due to Covid-19. While not being able to meet with folks face-to-face in Montréal was a disappointment, canceling the in-person event gave rise to organizing an online conference with no participation costs and the opportunity for international involvement.
We held a mini/pilot-version of the event on International Zine Library Day. We had participation from at least six countries, including Chile and Japan, as well as Anglophone nations and had one primarily Spanish session.
The larger scale conference will take place Halloween through Día de los Muertos 2020. We’re looking for more people to contribute to organizing efforts, and hope you’ll consider joining.
Ziba Perez and Jenna Freedman will lead two orientations on Saturday, August 15. We hope you can make one of them! If you want to help, but can’t make an orientation, let us know, and we’ll try to hook you up another way.

Quaranzines article from Salon
Yet another “zines are back, baby!” headline, this time from news/opinion site Salon. ;)Â Despite that, it’s a decent article, featuring the Arlington Public Library’s “Quaranzine” and the use of the hashtag #quaranzine on social media. A couple of notes:
- I/we (zinelibraries.info) can’t vouch for all of the steps taken to secure the rights to the zines put online. A lot of them will be CC, anti-copyright, copyleft, etc. but some may not be. You’ve been forewarned.
- If you come across something that you like or that’s useful, try to contact the creator and say “thanks” and maybe shoot them a donation if you can. Same goes for the zine libraries and distros… it costs money to keep digital resources online and alive, and it’ll always be appreciated.

Contemporary Collecting: DIY Publishing webinar
The Bibliographical Society of America hosted a webinar on July 28 about DIY Publishing. Miarosa Ciallella, a zinester and library worker, talks about zines as activism and zines as a way to resist technocracy. Ciallella talks about how we know that social media is oppressive and how zines are “micro-archives that reflect and reject dominant narratives of historical moments.” Ciallella argues that we should start mentally investing in DIY print culture as a way to document history. (The other half of the presentation, about real estate flyers from Real Estate Trailblazers, is also interesting, though not as relevant to this site!)

Why does this document exist?
We want the IZLD event on July 21 to be a space which is welcoming, supportive, and inclusive.
We want to create a space which recognises and challenges the oppression and exploitation that some members of our community are harmed by, and some members of our community benefit from, and which strives to be free from oppressive attitudes, actions, behaviours and language.

July 21st is International Zine Library Day! As a way of celebrating, we’ve planned virtual and multimodal events that span the globe and create a way for zine librarians to meet up from around the world. Three programming blocks run from UTC 20:00 to UTC 04:00 with all kinds of events, from workshops to panels to readings (and, of course, more). and if you’re missing strolling past the tables at a zine fair, check out our two tabling sessions, where you can drop in and see what our tabling zinesters and librarians have on showcase. There are also two ways to participate asynchronously if you can’t make it to the live event- you can submit to our cookzine compilation or participate in a snail mail zine swap. Before you join us, please make sure to review our Community Care Expectations. Don’t forget to tag your social media with #IZLD2020. We hope to see you there!

Fave Codes of Conduct/Guidelines for Participation
During International Zine Month 2020, zine librarians will host an online, international event, following by a longer, more intensive zine librarians shindig later in 2020. We would like to set some guidelines (code of conduct, safer/braver spaces policy, open to other ways to identify these guidelines). The coordination working group will propose something to the rest of the organizers, based on the most useful elements from other codes/policies/guidelines.

Quaranzines in library collections
Zine librarian and librarian Gina Murrell wrote a story for Library Journal called Libraries Collect COVID-19 Stories in Quaranzines on June 1st. She talks about how zines have allowed creators to process the difficult thoughts and emotions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Zine Librarians unConference, ZLuC 2020, in Montréal has been cancelled due to COVID-19. What is this? Every year, the zine libraries community raises money to help a person of color attend the Zine Librarians unConference (ZLuC). This year’s ZLuC will be held August 21 and 22 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. This grant is intended to help with associated travel and/or family care costs.
