Broken Pencil magazine, as it turns out, is published by a genocide denier, Hal Niedzviecki. Per a call for Niedzviecki to resign and for Broken Pencil to adopt the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel,

Hal has tweeted that there is no genocide in Gaza on several occasions. A few examples include the following: On June 5th, 2024, Hal quote tweeted a UofT Occupy for Palestine post about the IOF targeting of educational infrastructure in Gaza, by stating that “there is no genocide.” On July 17th, he quote tweeted poet Annick MacAskill, “This whole cancel @GillerPrize is nothing but disgusting one-sided woke antisemitism. There is no genocide or starvation in Gaza and Israel is not a colonizer.” Most recently, on September 2nd, he quote tweeted X user @TimaSa713, reiterating that “there is still and never has been any kind of genocide in Gaza.”
