Zine Creators- We need your input on interlibrary loan copy policies!

Barnard Zine Library is surveying zine makers to find out what their preferences are when it comes to making inter library loan copy requests of their own zines available to patrons.

The survey investigates the possibility of copying all or part of a zine to make available to a patron who can’t make it to the physical location of the library where the zine is located. This could be because the patron lives in another state or because the patron is a prisoner, for example.

The survey also asks some questions specific to how to handle inter library loan copy requests for prisoners. If zines are photocopied for prisoners,  should some of the contact information of the zine creator be blocked out? Or should it remain?

Librarians need help understanding how to handle inter-library loan copy requests in a way that respects the zine makers!

Thanks for your time! These results could help all zine librarians get a sense of what zine makers want when it comes to inter library loan copy policies.

Join us for a Virtual Meetup for Barefoot Zine Librarians

The zine collection that will be the basis of Emergent Zine Library

This is a photo of the zine collection in my living room that will soon turn into a pop up zine library experiment in Kansas City, MO.

During the 2013 Zine Librarian’s Unconference, I became aware of a desire to connect more with the zine librarians group. I wanted more opportunities to share support, resources, and solidarity with other people who are making zine libraries happen. I also knew I might not be able to attend the next conference in person, and this made me desire more online possibilities for sharing and support.

Milo also took interest in this idea, and he contacted me about arranging our first zine librarian’s virtual meetup.

The result is that we will attempt to use google hangout to host a virtual meetup for barefoot zine librarians. “Barefoot” libraries and librarians are ones that are usually autonomous and not affiliated with public or academic libraries. Infoshops, Community Centers, zine libraries in your garage – they are all relevant!

Right now we are choosing the dates. You can help by passing the word onto other barefoot zine librarians and marking your availability on the doodle poll.

XD Tribute to Zine Librarians

In Xerography Debt #33, editor Davida Gypsy Breier says nice things about us:

“As a zinemaker, I often go about my business of making zines because I still believe in tangible artifacts. Or, as Jeff Somers says in his column in this issue, they have discreteness. I forget that with print runs frequently fewer than 500, or even 100 copies, zines are often ephemeral. I knew that zine collections at libraries exist, and have contributed to several, but it wasn’t until after the [Caxton Club zine] symposium that it really sunk in that these librarians and archivists are unsung heroes of zine culture. They are saving and preserving documentation on events and subcultures that would otherwise go unrepresented or be grossly misrepresented. They are also working to make zines discoverable to new readers.

“So I would like to dedicate this issue to the zine librarians and archivists out there who are working to support and protect zines. Thank you!”

Call for Workshops: Zine Librarians (un)Conference, ZL(u)C 2011

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

July 8-9, 2011

Calling all zine collectors, information activists, underground bibliographers and barefoot librarians! Were seeking librarians of all stripes to lead a workshop or discussion at the 2nd bi-annual (un)conference of zine librarians!

We are interested in hosting informational skillshares that might include hands-on activities, or showcase what your library has accomplished. Your workshop could describe a task, approach, or scheme that would be of interest to fellow zine librarians. We are open to new ways of approaching zine librarianship, whether your collection is housed in an institutional, public, or community library or archive.

Workshops will be scheduled into the rest of the events that will occur on July 8 and 9, 2011 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Facilitated discussions and other events will also be worked into the schedule of events by participants at the conference, in the style of bar camp and other unconferences.

Scheduled events will include a zine reading (the culmination of the Orderly Disorder: Librarian Zinesters in Circulation Tour) and tours of local zine libraries, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukees Special Collections and the Queer Zine Archive Project.

The first Zine Librarians (un)Conference was held in Seattle, Washington in March 2009 at Zine Archive and Publishing Project (ZAPP), to great success. Announcing a librarian zinester summer tour, making its way from the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans to Milwaukee’s Zine Librarians (un)Conference.

We haven’t really started contacting people in our host cities, so this whole schedule could blow up at any time!

Core participants are Jenna Freedman, Celia Perez, Debbie Rasmussen (and her Zine Mobile), Jami Sailor, and John Stevens (from Australia). We’ll pick up other library worker zine makers along the way!

Zine Librarians’ Primary Web Resources

There’s been a request for a little extra info about the primary communication pages for zine librarians. I’ve added the ones I know about and since I registered for two of them today, I’ll annotate the processes required by each briefly.

This one is probably the most complicated to get settled into. One trick is just to think of it like a zine-specific, simplified version of facebook or myspace.

On the home page, you’ll see multiple “signup” buttons on the right side of the screen. Click any. Fill in your registration data and create your user name and password. The process is pretty straighforward. Once you’ve registered, you’ll be redirected to a welcome page on the authenticated side of the site. If you look in the upper right corner again, you’ll see a few new options available to members:

Inbox: needs no explanation

Alerts: Alerts are messages sent to you by applications you or your friends have added.

Friends: functions just the way any social networking site does (facebook, myspace.)

Settings: Through this option you can do things like set up your profile, add pictures, and change your privacy settings.

Setting up a profile is quickly accomplished, if not exactly intuitive. Once you click “settings” you’ll be directed to a page with fields asking for your profile information, gender, age, location, etc. Fill in as much or as little as you like (and, as mentioned before, if you want nothing to be visible, edit your profile in the privacy settings page.)

The final step is adding information about your professional activities (your zine doings) in your profile. Goto the page wemakezines.ning.com/profile/*yourprofilename*. From this page you can add your information either in the text box provided, or blog style. Please, as a zine librarian or ZL sympathizer, give us all a clear idea of where you work, what your collection’s mission is, your areas of interest in the big scheme of zine librarianship worldwide (web development? cataloging? programming? preservation? etc.) Aside from aesthetic improvements to your profile, you’re done!

This site was the planning hub for ZL(u)C 2009 at the Hugo House and Zapp in Seattle. Now it is the temporary home for the outcomes of the conference workshops and discussions and hub for workgroups to organize their thoughts and strategies. It functions as a typical wiki and anyone can edit any page (though please try not to delete anything if possible)

You are here. It has been suggested that this site become the primary reference point for all zine librarian related needs including policy and procedure manuals, programming help, cataloging discussions, and other meta-knowledge type, ongoing discussions. No need to register with the site in order to read or comment on posts. If you would like to be able to contribute to the knowledge pool, though, you will have to register and be approved by one of the site moderators.

There was a lot of talk about zinewiki at ZL(u)C 2009. The discussion seemed to be heading in the direction of making zinewiki.com some sort of reference encyclopedia for zines and possibly the authority file. Jerianne, one of the site moderators, expressed a little concern about not wanting it to get too cluttered with tangential entries and information. For now, it’s a text catalog 2,500 strong and constantly being updated. No need to register at all.

Zine Librarians (un)Conference in Seattle, March 14-15

Zine librarians, collectors and creators are invited to the Richard Hugo House and the Zine Archive and Publishing Project for two days of discussion and presentation centered around the collecting and organizing of zines; be they in libraries, archives, infoshops, basements, or living rooms.

Blending a traditional conference with the Unconference model, this gathering will be participatory and open. Workshops will be scheduled, and discussions of cataloging, organizing and promoting zine collections are expected, among other topics. All members of the zine community, including non-librarians, are invited to join in and take part.

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS:

If you are interested in leading a one-hour workshop during the conference, please submit the following information by creating a page for it on this wiki and listing it on the proposals page by Friday, February 28th, 2009:

1. The title of your workshop
2. Your name and a very brief biography of all workshop leaders (1-3 sentences each)
3. A brief (100 word) summary of topics you would address
4. Any tools, equipment or technology that would be required
5. Add your proposal to this list:

Guidelines for workshops: We are interested in hosting workshops that will be informational, how-to’s and describe a task, skill or scheme that another zine library would find useful. This could be hands-on, or a presentation of what your library has done well. Note: This is a call only for workshops that require extensive pre-planning, are practical in nature, or require specific materials. We will also have facilitated discussions at the conference, but those will be selected at the conference itself. List of potential discussion topics. Please add yours!

Library Journal to feature zine reviews!

In case anyone’s been wondering what all this talk of zine reviews is all about, here it is:

Beginning with the March 1, 2008 issue, Library Journal will feature a zine review four times a year. Jenna Freedman, the Zine Librarian at Barnard College will edit the column, which will be handled at LJ by magazine reviews editor Anna Katterjohn.

Freedman’s plan for the column is to alternate columns with multiple reviewers–in the style of Library Journal‘s regular book reviews with guest contributed themed columns more similar to this one on graphic novels. Over twenty zine librarians and other library workers, zine publishers, zine fest organizers, the editor of a successful zine review zine, a professional writer, and general zineophiles from all over the country, representing academic, public, and school librarians serving all populations are on the roster of reviewers.

Many of us zine librarian types are ecstatic to see zines’ presence in libraries aided and legitimized by their appearance as a regular feature in an important library publication–one with nearly 20,000 paid subscribers (per Ulrich’s).

Stay tuned to the Library Journal blog for a more formal announcement, in February 2008, or so.

Zine Librarian Meetup at ALA Annual 2007

Breakwells CoffeeThe zine libraries interest group met at ALA Annual 2007 in Washington DC. We met at Breakwells Coffee, a cute little coffee shop across the street from the Washington, DC convention Center. The service was A + Excellent! The owner waited on our tables, regardless of the long lunch line. Because we had made a reservation to use the facility for a meeting, the owner wanted us to have top service!

The primary topic of interest was the zine libraries web site. We planned out the pages that would be needed on the web site, discussed concerns, and then assigned content for development.
